The low-crowned Hystrix species known of the Neogene from Europe and Asia and some new finds from Shihuiba near Lufeng, South China, are compared on the basis of numerical data. The taxonomical allocation of the seven species recognised thus far is maintained. The occurrences of two coeval Eurasian late Turolian species is discussed. The material from Lufeng is described and allocated to Hystrix primigenia (Wagner, 1848), implicating an area of distribution of this species from S.E. Europe to S.E. Asia in the Turolian. In the northern Chinese Hystricidae the increase of the cheek tooth height is more advanced than in the the West Asiatic and European representatives. The difference in ecological environment of Hystrix gansuensis Wang & Qiu, 2002 (North... |

This paper presents the findings of an assessment aimed to evaluate, in terms of cost and energy consumption, the introduction of living mulches in different organic vegetable systems producing cauliflower. The study was carried out in three European countries (IT, SLO and DK) in the frame of the InterVeg project (Core Organic II). The achievements demonstrated that, in economic terms, farmers’ choice of a specific technique, like living mulch instead of sole cropping, can be influenced by two key elements: human labor and fossil fuel consumption. Different organic systems have a different proportion in using the two inputs depending on the specific farm strategy. |

The country reports presented in this section provide a snapshot in time of the prospects in different countries as well as outlining the diversity of European organic farming and markets. This section builds on the information and analysis in Chapter 5, with reports from over 30 countries. The reports begin by summarising the key indicators for 2012, from developments in the area of agricultural land under organic production and the number of different organic operators to the latest information on the organic market and trade. In addition the authors observe the sector’s current highlights and history, key institutions, production base and the market for organic products. The reports also consider the application of organic standards, legislation and... |

We investigate the relationship between diversity and productivity in Europe using an original dataset covering the NUTS 3 regions of 12 countries of the EU15 (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, former Western Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom). In so doing, we follow the empirical methodology developed by Ottaviano and Peri (2006a) in the case of US cities. The main idea is that, as cultural diversity may affect both production and consumption through positive or negative externalities, the joint estimation of price and income equations is needed to identify the dominant effect. Based on this methodology, we find that diversity is positively correlated with productivity. Moreover, we find evidence... |

In the framework of the OrganicDataNetwork project and internal project database was established in order to store the data collected in the two survey rounds of the OrganicDataNetwork project (Willer and Schaack 2013 and 2014). The database builds on the one that the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and the Agricultural Market Information Company (AMI) use for their organic data collection activities. However, this database was considerably expanded during the OrganicDataNetwork project. This document explains the features of the internal OrganicDataNetwork database and how the data can be acceded. |

One of the main aims of the case studies was to publish improved market reports. The data collected as part of the six case studies have been, or will shortly be, published in the five improved national organic market reports and one first regional market report (MOAN case study). This will make a contribution towards filling the many gaps that continue to exist in organic market data collection in Europe. |

The aim of this part of the work is to set out the detailed recommendations for significant improvements in the availability and quality of statistical information on the organic market. The recommendations are outlined in a short sentence followed by specific bullet points identifying areas of improvements. The recommendations are then described briefly in terms of background, objectives, and specific actions linked to the criteria and principles explained hereinafter. |

This is a synthesis report that provides an overview of the results of the OrganicDataNetwork project. Accompanying this, there is the companion report that contains the recommendations from the project on how to improve organic market data collection and dissemination. This report is targeted to EC DGs, EUROSTAT, national statistical institutes, organic market data providers/collectors, and other stakeholders who are interested in producing and using organic market statistics. This is not an original scientific report. In the interest of readability, we have freely made use of sentences, paragraphs and text extracted from the published reports of the OrganicDataNetwork, without further indication or acknowledgement except in the references. The project aims at increasing the availability of data and market information in order to improve the transparency of the organic market, by better coordination and other improvements of market data collection activities. As a means to these ends, the project aims to establish a permanent network of stakeholders and bodies actively involved in organic market data collection and publication and to review the needs of end-users with respect to organic market data. This network will closely co-operate with the European Commission, Eurostat and statistical offices of Member States, using existing structures for collecting and processing data on the organic market and stimulating the development of new ones by adapting existing models. OrganicDataNetwork is... |
